Englewood Fire Department History

1949 The Englewood Volunteer Fire Department was first chartered. This building was built in 1952

1956 Bought a new fire engine for $9,500

1966 Bought new fire engine for $35,000.  3 engines, 1 boat, 2 ambulances.

1971 Built Fire Station #2 in Grove City.

1973 Had 5 fire engines, 1 brush truck, 1 boat, 3 ambulances.

1977 First full-time staff worked days, to provide coverage while volunteers were at work. 
3 firefighters, 2 EMT's.

1980 First full time paid service.  8 firefighters working 3 shifts providing 24/7 service with 1 engine at Sta. 1.  Volunteers continue to provide additional staffing. Residents provided funding by paying $12 per household in "dues".

1983 Englewood Area Fire Control District established by Florida Legislature. 
Funding provided by non-ad valorm assessment.

1985 Fire Station #73 in North Englewood opened.

1994 Fire Station #74 in Rotonda West opened.


Nov. 2, 2004 Voters approve an increase in fire assessment fees effective Oct. 2005. 

January 2006 5th fire company is placed in service,
increasing minimum staffing to 11 firefighter/EMT's on duty.


2006 three new E-One Typhoon class engines purchased with impact fees


April 2007, Engine 76 is assigned to Charlotte County Sta 14 in Cape Haze. 
This is the 6th fire company, increasing minimum staffing
to 13 firefighter/EMT's on duty.


April 2008 Station 75, opens in Englewood-East
Engine 75 is the 7th fire company increasing minimum staffing
to 15 firefighter/EMT's on duty.

February 2008 Englewood Fire Training Center opened
